How is it different?

Unlike typical Wi-Fi you buy from consumer electronics stores, or the Wi-Fi on your ISP’s broadband router, tantra gives you one seamless network, not a series of isolated networks unaware of users’ needs.

tantra points are aware of all active devices and the resources they need. So, as users move around the home they are handed-off smoothly between one point and the next, without slow downs, buffering or disconnects.

It also uses artificial intelligence in the cloud to regularly measure and optimize the user experience.

Wi-Fi coverage is just the tip of the iceberg.  When you have only one access point in your home, coverage is incomplete. So, in some areas the Wi-Fi is slow, and in others it doesn’t work at all.

When you’ve had enough of dodging dead spots, you buy additional access points, or range extenders.  Problem solved, you think!  The truth is you only half-solved it, and added new problems you never anticipated. Let’s explain:

Separate isolated networks
The moment you configure the new access points, it becomes clear they are not an extension of the Wi-Fi network you already have. Instead, each access point has its own network name and password, and requires separate management. Now you have two or more isolated networks.

Inconsistent performance
Although you now have Wi-Fi coverage in more areas of the home, when the whole family is using it, performance is erratic and it often grinds to a halt, but you don’t know why. And when you move around you keep getting disconnected and video freezes or buffers.

Impossible management
With each network being separate, the onus is on you to figure out which Wi-Fi channel each access point should use, for best results. You also have no way to detect or compensate for dead spots or interference from neighbors, nor any visibility of who is using it, how much or when.

By treating all access points as a coordinated network, tantra delivers wall-to-wall coverage, consistent performance and uninterrupted mobility around the home. As for management, it manages itself so you don’t have to.

Two big differences between isolated networks and one coordinated network are: How devices roam between access points, and how they choose which access point to roam to. Let’s see how this works:

Session hand-off versus lost connection

As you approach the boundary between two access points in the same network, you are automatically handed off to the next access point, if it can give you better service, than the one you’re on. Without disrupting your active connection.

In contrast, when moving between access points on different networks the signal progressively degrades until you finally lose the connection. Only then, your device tries to connect to another access point.

In fact, you might be right next to an access point that could serve you well, yet you remain stuck on one that no longer can, because you haven’t quite lost the connection, yet. How absurd is that?

Best performance versus strongest signal

It gets worse.  When seeking out an access point to connect to, devices are dumb. By default they connect to the access point with the strongest signal. But strongest signal doesn’t assure best performance. It might be overloaded by other users, while another one is idle.

So even though your device hears a strong signal, it may get only a small slice of the available air time. In other words, 100% of a weak signal may be better than 10% of a strong signal.

In contrast, because tantra tracks loads, measures device performance, and runs simulations in the cloud, it has a holistic view of the network. So it can intelligently steer devices to connect to the best service, not the strongest signal.
